    • A guide to 7 of the best watering holes in Chester

    • The famous walled city of Chester, once a famous Roman settlement that sat astride the banks of the River Dee, is famous for many things. Its city walls, castle and cathedral draw many visitors each year, as does the famous zoo on the outskirts of the city. The fabulous shopping arcade and the chance to enjoy a trip along the river also draw in many punters to this stylish and chic city. For many, however, Chester is a fantastic place to visit with partying in mind, with a plethora of stylish pubs, bars and clubs that even the star of the new Foster’s advert, Holly Valance, would be able to recognise as being both ’smart and casual’.

So if you fancy doing a Chester version of new Foster’s beer legends Brad and Dan, by heading off to the walled city to find somewhere that embodies ‘smart and casual’, then why not sample a cool new Foster’s Gold beer or two, or perhaps try one of the many local ales at any of the establishments listed below!

      1. Bear and Billet (94 Lower Bridge Street, Chester, 01244 311 886)

Built in 1664, this pub was around before the Great Fire of London was merely a spark. With a selection of ales from around the globe, bottled beer and live sports showing all year round, the Bear and Billet is a great place to start.

      2. ABar @ Abode (Grosvenor Road, Chester, 01244 347 000)

If you fancy something a little smarter and contemporary then the ABar is a great choice, a cocktail and Champagne bar with a difference, but don’t worry chaps, as they also serve a great range of bottled and draught lagers and beers. ABar is a great place to begin, or end your evening.

      3. Custom House Inn (65-67 Watergate Street, Chester, 01244 324 435)

Another pub dating from the 17th Century that really looks the part, if you are seeking a great pint in beautiful Tudor surroundings then the Custom House is the perfect choice.

      4.Oddfellows (20 Lower Bridge Street, Chester, 01244 400 001)

Oddfellows has to be seen to be believed, ostentatious it may be but if you fancy a drink of a cool Foster’s, a dram of whisky, a cocktail, glass of Champagne or even a simple cup of tea, then Oddfellows provide it and in their own inimitable style.

      5. Shropshire Arms (45 Northgate Street, Chester, 01244 321 194)

A modern, contemporary pub with an eye-catching Tudor frontage, the Shropshire Arms hosts live music on a Friday and Saturday and has an extensive range of locally-sourced produce on offer, along with a great range of beers and ales.

      6. The Slug and Lettuce (44 Bridge Street, Chester, 01244 319 873)

If you have young family in tow and fancy a break during the day, where better to enjoy a bite to eat and a drink than at the Slug and Lettuce. Families are welcome during the day, but at night, the place is a popular, adults only bar, serving a wide range of drinks.

      7. Watergates (11-13 Watergate Street, Chester, 01244 320 515)

Recently refurbished to a high standard, Watergates is in a grade 1 listed building and boasts its own rooftop terrace, the only one in the city. With a range of outstanding beers and wines available, it’s easy to see why drinking in such stylish surroundings is so popular with the locals.

Whether you are seeking a cool Foster’s Gold, somewhere that’s smart and casual, or a combination of the two, Chester is a fabulous, vibrant and happy city that welcomes visitors to its bars. Take advantage of the myriad of quality establishments in the city and enjoy the friendly local hospitality.
