Llechwedd Slate Caverns
Back

A 'must do' day out, in and around Snowdonia - two spectacular underground tours…a great day out for the whole family.

Llechwedd Slate Caverns offers a choice of two spectacular underground tours into the vast slate mines of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Travel on the Miners Tramway in carriages hauled by a battery driven locomotive into a network of man-made caverns.  This is a guided tour and at various points you will alight to learn of the skills needed to extract slate – conveniently bedded between layers of granite like chert, which give integral strength to the mines’ 16 floors.

Or, descend into the Deep Mine for a 25 minute walk through ten “sound and light” sequences via the spectacular underground lake, and be guided by ‘Sion Dolgarregddu’, the ghost of a young miner who tells the story of his life in a slate quarrying community during the late nineteenth century.

Easy access and free parking, with plenty of surface facilities to enjoy.  Shops, cafe, slatecraft workshop, and the Victorian Village with its traditional tavern and old fashioned sweet shop.
