Oddfellows Restaurant Opens to Public
Oddfellows in Chester launches two new restaurants on Wednesday 30th September with a champagne celebration to mark the arrival of Michelin starred TV Chef Richard Phillips. The restaurant offering is expanding with a new street level bistro and has undergone a £400,000 refurbishment of the kitchens and dining area.
The new restaurants will reflect the existing imaginative design by interior design consultants Lister Carter having a playful and warm atmosphere where nothing matches but the whole thing works. Oddfellows is already known for its quirky and sumptuous furnishings and now the restaurant is evolving to a new level of sophistication.
The food offering is changing too with more focus on seasonal food purchased locally. Richard is promising to bring a ‘best of British’ menu but is not neglecting European dishes.

“Oddfellows has already established itself as a great venue and the work we are carrying out now will see the restaurant take another step forward in quality, service and value. Oddfellows is going to be one of the leading venues in the North West to relax, dine and stay at. By bringing Richard to Oddfellows we are going to produce the best dining experience available in the region.” Ken Roscoe, managing director at Oddfellows commented.
Richard’s arrival will see the new restaurant opening to the public on the 2nd October after a champagne launch. For Richard this will be the fourth restaurant he is currently involved in and Oddfellows will reflect his principles of buying the best local produce available.
“Our policy of purchasing seasonal food allows us to buy the most flavoursome food at a time when it is in abundance. This adds value, supports the local economy and provides the tastiest contemporary food. As a chef it also enables us to keep the menus fresh and exciting as we change with the seasons.”
Oddfellows opens to the public on Friday 2nd October.
Oddfellows Hall was built as ‘Bridge House’ in 1676 by a wealthy widow called Dame Mary Calveley who had outlived her husband, Sir Hugh Calveley by 57 years! She paid a fine of £20 to the City Assembly to have the rows removed from the front of the Mansion. Dame Mary was very much the city’s socialite and she built her house primarily to entertain the movers and shakers of the time.
Oddfellows celebrated its first birthday in April 2009 with an Easter Party Extravaganza! The team threw a fabulous Alice in Wonderland party with drinks that made the guests get smaller so they could crawl through the magic tunnel and into the garden in the bar, with butterflies fluttering over their heads and grass growing under their feet. There they found the Mad Hatters tea party with delicious cakes which said ‘eat me’ which made them get bigger again. Outside, the Caterpillar waxed lyrical and the Cheshire Cat sent everyone in the wrong direction. Guests played crazy golf with upside down flamingos and threw balls at the Queen of Hearts to win prizes. Oddfellows offers a full Event Management service for weddings, conferences and exclusive hires.
Many other exciting developments are coming up over the next couple of months including a new 40 cover Brasserie space at the recently acquired 16-18 Lower Bridge Street. This coincides with Celebrity Chef Richard Phillips joining the team as Consultant chef who will be delivering the entire food product. Richard stars in numerous television cookery programmes like the BBC’s Ready Steady Cook and ITV’s Daily Chefs. He is also chef-patron of Thackeray’s Restaurant in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, which gained a coveted Michelin star in its first year in 2001 and boasts three AA rosettes for outstanding modern French cooking. He is also a partner in the fine dining Hengist Restaurant and the Plough, a gastropub - both in Kent. Richard Phillips at Chapel Down, the award winning vineyard, is his latest venture.
‘Richard Phillips at Oddfellows’, which launches mid-August, will be very much a “hands on” operation – made possible by the latest technology. He will be a regular presence in Chester at the outset and able to communicate with his team of chefs at Oddfellows via kitchen webcams, allowing frequent changes of the menu under his personal direction.
The Dining Rooms upstairs at Oddfellows will therefore re-launch at the same time under Richard’s watchful eye serving classic French and British cuisine and Richards launch menus for both the downstairs Brasserie and Upstairs restaurant will be available on-line from the end of July.
Oddfellows continues to be a firm favourite for Chester’s Corporate market, with many local businesses holding Corporate Membership. Benefits include being able to use the upstairs private members lounge and terrace (with complimentary wi-fi), a guaranteed room rate of £125 (including breakfast and parking) and priority access at weekends and race days. Members can also use the any one of the four meeting and conferences spaces with no additional room hire to pay and a day delegate rate of £20. Membership includes exclusive invitations to two exclusive parties a year – the Christmas Winter Wonderland party and the Birthday extravaganza. Oddfellows Members receive their own monthly E-Newsletter and can log onto the ‘Odd Blog’ for instant updates.
Breakfast is served from 7am Monday to Friday and 9am on Saturday. Brunch is served from 10am on Sundays. The Brasserie menu is served from midday until 10pm every day and ‘Richard Phillips at Oddfellows’ launches mid-August with the re-opening of the upstairs Dining Rooms. Our street level restaurant on Bridge Street will open mid-September.
If you like the quirky and unusual, where the unexpected comes as standard, where all is unique and nothing is as it seems – then you’ll be in good company at Oddfellows.
We don’t think you’ll have seen anything like it, and life will probably now never be the same again - for this ladies and gentlemen, is Oddfellows. Everything here is Odd, in the nicest possible way and its doors open up to you on Saturday 12th April, early afternoon.
There is something here for everyone. Everyone that is who enjoys being groovy, eating lovely, uncomplicated food and drinking delicious drinks. And if you’re serious about wine, then you’ll be chuffed too. There are many different spaces and rooms – a labyrinth of fairytale and make believe places to suit whatever mood you’re in.
Oddfellows is open to everyone. But if you want a more private relationship with us, then you can become a Member. But you don’t have to. There are many lovely places for you to enjoy even if you just want to be our friend. And that costs nothing, a bit like manners.
Monday to Friday we start serving a scrummy breakfast from 7am, and on Saturdays we start at 8am. Sundays however is all about a long, lazy, chilled out brunch and that starts at 10am and finishes at 6pm. Stay all day, put your feet up and listen to some far out tunes whilst drinking the perfect bloody mary.
Sunday to Thursday we finish taking care of you at midnight. But on Fridays and Saturdays, we want to look after you all night or certainly until last orders at 3am anyway. Oddfellows finishes being a lovely place to eat and drink at 11pm and becomes a glamorous hangout full of cocktails and fabulous tunes mixed up by our resident DJ’s. But you really need to let me know you’re coming so I can get you on the guest list, get you a booth, get you a cocktail waitress and make sure you have a super duper time.
We do simple, rustic, locally produced food in our downstairs Brasserie or serious, grown up food in our upstairs Dining Rooms. We do glamorous Afternoon Tea in The Tea Rooms or in the Enchanted Garden. You can even have breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner in one of our outside Dining Tents or you could get lost with lots of your friends in the Secret Garden. You could also have a very posh private dinner – with bespoke menus and a record player with over 100 pieces of vinyl for you to play with.
Or you could pop in to the bar, have a chat with one of our bartenders and enjoy a nice, cold beer. Whatever you want to do, please come and do it with us. We are now taking restaurant and late night guest list reservations. Please email me at izzy.grey@oddfellows.biz or check out the website at www.oddfellows.biz.
Thanks for listening. Izzy x
The spark that forms the basis of a friendship is indefinable, but instinctive. It's hard to say why you get on with certain people; you just do.
In signing up members for Oddfellows, we're not looking for the bulgingest wallets or the most crisply ironed socks. We're looking for that spark. A connection. A mutual oddfellowness that will build longstanding respect and appreciation; of the venue and of each other.
For members, there are no stops unpulled out and we plan to look after you very very well.
To start with, you have exclusive access to Members' areas, designed to be incredible, inspiring spaces. By day, the business facilities are slick. You can hole up here for a private meeting or rub shoulders with other like-minded business folk and entrepreneurs in a focused environment, and feed off the air of dynamism.
When the laptops click shut, smart office space morphs into sophisticated play rooms that whisk all thoughts of work away and prepare you for indulgence.
The Members' Lounge is an eclectic mix of the traditional and the slightly bizarre (unless you think a pig-shaped table commonplace, in which case we shall have to try harder). The Dining Rooms are positively wow, and the Private Dine Room is wow2.
