    • A Real Heavyweight at Chester Zoo

    • As girlfriends go, Swiss-born Indian rhino Batschii is a real heavyweight.

But for her new mate Patna, she is nothing less than a match made in heaven.

Batschii, who arrived at her new home at Chester Zoo just days ago, is currently taller and, at 1.6 tonnes, heavier than her smaller mate, who weighs in at 1.1 tonnes.

But staff at the 110-acre zoo are hoping that this won't deter the three-year-old Greater One-horned rhinoceroses from hitting it off so that they eventually hear the pitter-patter of rhino feet.

Mike Jordan, Curator of Birds and Mammals, said: "Batschii and Patna may have just a couple of months between them in age but Bastchii is certainly the weightier of the two.

"We're confident though that Patna prove to be more than a match for her. Batschii is the first female Indian rhino to come to the zoo and we're hopeful that she will be out and about by Easter."

Batschii and Patna's antics together will now come under the watchful eyes of the zoo's rhino keepers.

Senior rhino keeper Helen Massey climbed 5,896 metres of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for new cameras and monitoring equipment for the rhinoceroses' enclosure.

Ten months of training in Snowdon and the Lake District paid off with Helen raising £1100.

Batschii's arrival will also feature in the Zoo Days series on Five, weekdays at 6.30pm.
