Blushing bride-to-be Nichola Oakes leapt to the chance to pop the question during a special trip to Chester Zoo.
35-year-old Nichola took full advantage of the Leap Year and asked long-term partner Chris Woodcock, 27, to marry her.
Under the watchful gaze of the inquisitive Asian elephants, Nichola took a stunned Chris to the zoo's Leap of Faith bandstand where she asked him to tie the knot.
A delighted Nichola, who will now get to choose her own design of engagement ring, said: "Chris has wanted to get married for a long time. I know he has always wanted a fairytale wedding, but I've always said no. Up until now, I've been too scared to think about marriage."
Nichola, who works in life assurance, and Chris, who works in telecommunication sales, have been together for four years after meeting at a taxi rank.
The couple live in Telford, Shropshire, and Nichola had told Chris he was coming to the zoo for a treat.
"I think Chris might have had an idea, or certainly hoped, that something was going on. I certainly wasn't about to wait another four years to get the chance to ask him and I'm delighted he said yes," added Nichola.
It was the first time that the 110-acre zoo had opened a Leap of Faith bandstand. Chris and Nichola were also treated to a luxury hamper to help their celebrations along.
Guest Services Manager Julie Bird said: "I have heard of quite a few brave men who have proposed at the zoo over the years and indeed many couples are married here at our Oakfield Manor.
"However, a Leap Year is the perfect chance for the ladies to turn the tables and our Leap of Faith gave them the opportunity to do that. We are delighted for Nichola and Chris and wish them all the very best for their future together."
