In a celebration of the city’s history, UK charity English Heritage will soon be presenting an immersive experience in Chester, offering entertainment for people of all ages.
Dubbed the “Chester Castle Civil War Open Weekend”, the two-day event will see the city’s historical castle open its doors to the public for a trip back in time.
The upcoming occasion is free of charge to all and will allow those attending to gain first-hand experience of the sounds and smells of the Civil War, which began in August 1642 and ended nine years and 12 days later in September 1651.
Within the impressive surrounds of Chester Castle, those enjoying the weekend will have the opportunity to interact with cooks, craftsmen, cavaliers loyal to the king, and expert historians. All participants can gain fresh insight into what it was like to live in Chester during this tempestuous time in English history.
The experience takes place around Chester Castle’s 12th-century Agricola Tower, which is renowned for being the historical fortress’s first stone gateway. The tower’s first floor houses the chapel of St. Mary de Castro and wall paintings that date back to 1240. Stairs nearby allow visitors to take a wall-walk, where they can enjoy excellent views over the city.
The Chester Castle Civil War Open Weekend will take place on Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18. The free event will be open to the public from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on both days. Entrance to the event is available via the County Court car park on Grosvenor Street.
