Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
14/12/2009 till 03/01/2010
Location: Venue Cymru, Llandudno
BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing judge, Craig Revel Horwood, is hot-footing it to Llandudno’s Venue Cymru this Christmas to appear in the theatre’s pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
With his reputation of being the harshest of the judges on the primetime television programme, Llandudno audiences will have their opportunity to boo Craig as he takes to the stage in the role of one of pantomime’s ultimate villains, the Wicked Queen!
Michael Harrison, Managing Director of Qdos Pantomimes, the world’s largest pantomime producer, said:
“We are thrilled that Craig is able to appear in the Venue Cymru pantomime alongside his television commitments. Swapping his evening suit for an array of outrageous costumes as the Wicked Queen, Craig is the perfect pantomime baddie who will no doubt attract his fair share of boos and hisses from the audience in true panto style!”

The Gary Fletcher Band
26/07/2009 till 26/07/2009
Location: Alexander's, Rufus Court, Northgate Street, Chest
On drums – Pick Withers
Pick was a founder member of Dire Straits and appears on the band’s first four albums. He thus provides the magical rhythmic basis for classics like ‘Sultans of Swing’, ‘Telegraph Road’, ‘Private Investigations’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and countless others. He’s been a pro musician since the mid sixties when at only 17 years old he went with The Primitives to Italy and enjoyed great chart and live success. He worked as the house drummer at the legendary Rockfield Studio in Wales for a number of years and has played on countless records by numerous significant artists including Dave Edmunds, Magna Carta, Robert Plant and, perhaps most celebratedly, is featured on the classic album ‘Slow Train Coming’ by Bob Dylan.
On lead guitar – Steve Ling
Steve started playing guitar when he was ten and quickly got serious about it. Having gained A grade passes in music at both GCSE and A level he went on to study at The Guitar Institute for 3 years gaining an honours degree in Popular Music Performance. Paying his dues and his way through college he worked in a Frank Sinatra tribute act for 4 years, played onstage with Shaun Baxter, Paul Elliott, Terry Gregory and Hamish Stuart. Recently he has been working with emerging Icelandic singing star Hafdis Huld touring the UK, France, Spain, Sweden and Iceland, fantasy-pop-rock sextet Elyzian and progressive nu-metallers Aphid.
On bass guitar – Jack Fletcher
Jack started playing drums when he was seven and has since gone on to play guitar and bass. He joined local rock band Aphid on drums at age thirteen, which over the years has endured various personnel changes but is still one of South West London's best-known and respected nu-metal bands. Regrettably, in September 2001, just as Aphid were gaining serious industry interest, Jack suffered a near fatal accident that hospi

Learn with Tatton at the RHS Flower Show
22/07/2009 till 26/07/2009
Location: Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 6QN
Bring your children to Tatton’s stand at the RHS Flower Show, Tatton Park, and learn how to graft. Not horticultural grafting, however, but hard graft - polishing the family silver and trying life in service!
This year, Tatton’s Education team will be giving our younger visitors a taste of the many educational opportunities on offer at Tatton Park. They can sample life from a number of different periods in history and try their hand at traditional children’s activities.
From the Victorian era, they will be able to dress up as maids or servants and learn how to perfectly polish the silver; ‘Medieval’ staff will be on hand to teach them how to weave on a loom and make pot pourri bags to ward off fourteenth century smells and sicknesses! Thrifty ‘Aunt Mary’ from Tatton’s 1940s Farm will show children how to ‘make do and mend’ by making a colourful rag rug. Children can also decorate a paper plate to take home, using inspiration gained from the Egerton family’s ceramic collection.
Lynn Podmore, Learning and Visitor Services Manager commented “This is a great way for showcasing the wide ranging activities Tatton delivers, whilst giving children the opportunity to have a fun hands-on experience, and for teachers to ask about the programmes we run in an informal environment.”
Accommodating thousands of pupils a year, Tatton’s award winning education department provides creative and inspirational educational days for pupils across the North West and beyond.
Its extensive education programme enables pupils from a wide variety of age groups to experience life in a medieval manor house, a Victorian country estate and Mansion or as a World War Two evacuee in an authentic working farm.
Many activities explored with school groups can also be enjoyed by families during Tatton’s extensive calendar of events. At the annual Medieval Fayre and Viking Sunday events children can try on armour, try ‘have a go’ archery (over 8s only), even witness dramatic battles! All these events bring history to life and create unforgettable experiences for the thousands of pupils and families who pass through Tatton’s gates.
Lynn commented “Whether you are seven or seventy, there are activities, gardens and historic sites at Tatton which will appeal to everyone and make this an enjoyable family day out”.
Tatton’s Stand will be situated next to its Back to Back Garden ‘The Hermit’s Grotto: Inspiration for Imagination’ at site D16C, as part of Cheshire’s Gardens of Distinction.

Chester Summer Music Festival - Gala Concert
18/07/2009 till 18/07/2009
Location: Chester Cathedral, Chester
Performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chester Festival Chorus under the direction of James Burton. this concert is dedicated to the memory of Richard Hickox, former Artistic Director in the early 1900s and who conducted the Festival Chorus on numberous occasions.
PRE-PERFORMANCE TALK: Memories of Richard Hickox
The Macdonald New Blossoms Hotel
6pm – 6.30pm
Andrew Green, Writer, Broadcaster and Producer, with Frances Cooke, Chester Festival Chorus Chorusmaster, will reminisce about Richard Hickox as conductor and organist and talk about their memories of Richard as a friend.
THE MAIN CONCERT
In Handel’s output, ‘Israel in Egypt’ was a key work and marked the change from being primarily a composer of Italian opera to a composer of English Oratorio.
The work will be prefaced by one of his organ concertos in the style that Handel performed the work in 1739. The piece, in which the chorus takes the lion’s share of the music, is full of Handel’s trademark word painting and spectacular choral and orchestral effects. Although it had a chequered history in Handel’s own lifetime with several different versions of his own making, the piece was taken up in the 19th century as one of the great favourites of Victorian choral societies. It became the invariable partner of the Messiah in the massive Handel Festivals held at the Crystal Palace starting in 1857.
James Burton, an established and sought after choral conductor, leads tonight’s journey – a glorious choral finish to our 2009 Festival.

Location: Borders Books, Cheshire Oaks, CH65 9HD
Vanilla Heart Publishing Romantic Suspense Novelist Victoria Howard Short Listed For Prestigious Joan Hessayon Award
Vanilla Heart Publishing’s first international author, Victoria Howard, one of the nominees for the Joan Hessayon New Writers' Scheme Award organised by the Romantic Novelists' Association, embarks on a book tour throughout the UK with her novel, The House on the Shore.
Chair of the RNA, Catherine Jones, who judges the award, describes this year's novels as "perfect examples of romantic fiction: engaging, brilliant books with a wonderful love story at the heart of each one".
The RNA's New Writer's Scheme gives unpublished authors of romantic fiction the opportunity to join the Association and submit a full-length manuscript for appraisal by a published author writing in the same romantic genre. Outstanding manuscripts, if deemed ready, are passed to a suitable publisher or agent for consideration. The Joan Hessayon New Writers' Scheme Award is given to the best of the published debut novels by New Writers' Scheme members that year.
The House on the Shore is a visually magical tale takes the reader on a journey from the remote shores of Loch Hourn in the Scottish Highlands to the singular beauty of Cape Cod.
When Anna MacDonald leaves Edinburgh to find peace in the Scottish Highlands, she gets a twofold surprise: a lost sailor teaches her to love again…while a mysterious stranger has plans to kill her.
The House on the Shore has garnered several editorial reviews, including the Coffee Time Romance and More review;
“The House on the Shore is a sensually suspenseful story filled with non-stop action, romance, and mystery. The facts of Scotland are told with brilliant description that bring the land to life and leave you feeling as if you have stepped out of your world and into the pages. Ms. Howard uses such

Soapbox: Presented by Chester Performs

Location: Alexander's, Rufus Court, Northgate Street, Chest
Action Hero makes live art and performance that seeks to engage the audience as collaborators and co-conspirators during the piece. The company is interested in creating work that links audiences together and unifies them as part of the live event, building a temporary community. Its current interests lie in work that re-writes landscapes and encourages audiences to reconsider the spaces around them.
We want to make a Western. We have a cowboy hat and some ketchup. We want the scene where our hero walks into the bar and everyone stops talking. We want the scene where the whore begs to be loved. We want to cheat at cards. We want blood and guns. We want it to be noon. We want it to be dusk.
Everyone will have a moustache. All the bad guys laugh. Dust blows across a deserted street. Music.
Together with our audience we reclaim this chaotic half-arsed Western as our own and celebrate the failure of generic heroes, cheap whores and the all American idol.
Like the rest of the Soapbox programme, A Western will take place in venues not normally used for performance art.
“Resolutely off-kilter but entirely accessible…brilliant…immensely clever” Metro (on A Western)

28/05/2009 till 28/05/2009
Location: Alexander's, Rufus Court, Chester CH1 2JW
Steve's band have worked the pub and club circuits since 1971. In 1974 they were spotted by Pete Townshend of The Who. This led to The Steve Gibbons Band joining The Who's management stable, recording their first Polydor album "Any Road Up" and touring with The Who in Britain, Europe and the USA. Playing the concert arenas, they shared the stage with acts like Little Feat, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Electric Light Orchestra, the J. Geils Band and Nils Lofgren. The UK Top 10 hit "Tulane" led to three more albums with Polydor.
In 1981, after a change in personnel, The Steve Gibbons Band recorded "Saints & Sinners" for RCA and later responded to an invitation from the German Democratic Republic to become the first western rock band to tour the major cities of East Germany.
Nine more albums were released in the 1980s and 90's and the touring continues
The Dylan Project
The Dylan Project was a trio Gibbons formed at the end of the 1990s, innovatively using fretless bass, guitars, accordion and piano to perform classic Dylan songs as well as Gibbons' own material.
Brum Rocks
As of 2006 Gibbons continues to tour with his band, and is also a member of the hit UK show 'Brum Rocks Live', along with Bev Bevan (The Move, ELO), Trevor Burton (The Move), Danny King, and writer Laurie Hornsby. The show tours the UK, and is produced and promoted by Brian Yeates Associates.
Gibbons lives with his wife Suzie in Edgbaston, Birmingham. They have two sons and a daughter

Acoustic Graffiti
21/05/2009 till 21/05/2009
Location: Alexander's, Rufus Court, Chester CH1 2JW
Company History
Acoustic Graffiti are Nick Caldwell, and Steve Jervis, a jazz/blues instrumental guitar duo based in Warrington, Cheshire. Having gained over 20 years of live performance across blues, jazz and big band genres, Steve & Nick came together in 1997.
Graffiti’s original material is difficult to pigeon-hole as out and out jazz/blues. It’s both & neither… a heady blend of jazz, Latin & blues styles and a fusion of tastes and experience. Inspired by the expressive styles of guitarists such as Martin Taylor, Eduardo Niebla & Antonio Forcione the set is driven by potent melodies, unconventional chord voicings, light and shade, mood and space.
Graffiti’s album ‘Out of Nowhere’ was debuted to sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, the prestigious De Vere Belfry, and UK jazz festivals from Cheltenham to Manchester.
The Noughties have been punctuated with sessions at Manchester’s acclaimed Cinnamon Club alongside the likes of Georgie Fame and Barb Jungr.
Summary of show
A vibrant and expressive set of instrumental acoustic guitar material. It’s all new and original, driven by potent melodies, light and shade, drawing upon the passion and grace of jazz, Latin & blues.

She Stoops To Conquer
21/05/2009 till 21/05/2009
Location: Venue Cymru, Llandudno
BIG WIGS, BIG CLASSIC, BIG LAUGHS….
Mappa Mundi Present
She Stoops To Conquer
A MAPPA MUNDI | THEATR MWLDAN | TORCH THEATRE CO-PRODUCTION
The irrepressable Mappa Mundi are back! The Reigning Monarchs of accessible theatre invite you to a sumptious society romp with Oliver Goldsmiths classic 18th Century farce She Stoops to Conquer, which visits Venue Cymru on Thursday 21 May as part of a 20 date tour of Wales during April and May 2009. With an outrageous mix of secret elopements and nocturnal confusions, this satirical poke at polite society paints a ribald and hilarious portrait of life and love in the town and country with mistaken identities, acts of blatant greed, selfishness and plain stupidity, making it perfect fodder for Mappa Mundi’s sardonic style. Guest Directed by Peter Doran of The Torch Theatre, Milford Haven, audiences can expect larger than life characters, big laughs and even bigger hairpieces…
This time round the cast line up includes comic genius Kieran Self, dentist from BBC’s My Family, policeman in High Hopes and writer of Theatr na n’Og’s amazing production Cyrano. Fans of Welsh Rugby Scrum IV will recognize Richard Nichols, as well as some familiar Mappa Mundi faces. You can even get a taste of the behind the scenes action by visiting http://mappamundi.mwldan.fastmail.fm/, to see an hilarious trailer specially made to accompany the tour, or visit Mappa Mundi’s website www.mappa-mundi.org.uk to see what all the fuss is about!
Mappa Mundi are renowned for their sumptuous and inventive sets, clever lighting and gorgeous colourful costumes, and for this particular production they have courted the directing skills of Peter Doran, Artistic Director of Torch Theatre, Milford Haven, who says; ‘When asked what I’d like to direct, She Stoops to Conquer was my first choice, not onl

An Acoustic Evening with Dave Kelly & Maggie Bell
17/05/2009 till 17/05/2009
Location: Alexander's, Rufus Court, Chester CH1 2JW
Although they have known each other just a few years, their long time mutual respect for each other’s music and voices recently brought Maggie and Dave together professionally.
This will be an evening with two stalwarts of the British R&B scene, two great voices, two great reputations, and a wonderful couple of hours of acoustic blues, soul and good times…..and no doubt lots of warmth and humour also.
A solo set by Dave, followed by a set with Dave playing guitar for Maggie's songs, all topped by a few duets.
Maggie Bell - Scotland's Queen of Soul, founder member of Stone the Crows, later had an incredibly successful solo career on both sides of the Atlantic, now once again back on the music scene after a 20 year sojourn.
Dave Kelly - London's slide guitar king, having learned his trade in the backing bands of, and recording with, Son House, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells to name but five blues legends, has been a member of The Blues Band for the past 28 years.

Fairport Convention - Outdoor Concert
15/05/2009 till 15/05/2009
Location: Alexander's, Rufus Court, Chester CH1 2JW
A lighter take on classic folk rock
Fairport Convention, the legendary band which originated folk rock music, is on the road in May and Chester music-lovers are in for a treat.
The Oxfordshire-based band's Outdoor concert at Alexanders on Friday 15 May will present a more contemplative take on the Fairport repertoire.
Fairport Convention will perform a selection of material old and new. As well as favourites from their enormous back catalogue, the band will be playing songs and instrumentals from their most recent albums.
This line-up features Simon Nicol (vocals, guitar), Dave Pegg (bass guitar), Ric Sanders (violin), Chris Leslie (mandolin, fiddle, vocals) and Gerry Conway (percussion).
"We're really looking forward to visiting Chester again." says founder-member Simon Nicol. "We love the local audience and Alexanders is a great venue for live music. "
The members of Fairport are also busily preparing for the band's annual open-air music festival at Cropredy in Oxfordshire. The three-day event, one of the UK's best-loved music festivals, takes place on 13, 14 and 15 August.

The 50s Rock 'n' Roll & Skiffle Revival
