As ever we are planning another action-packed couple of days for all our visitors.
If you want to experience and celebrate all that is great and good about the countryside then the Cheshire County Show is the only place to be as it brings together the many interesting and fascinating aspects of farming and rural life in Cheshire.
Visitors and members of the agricultural community come together in the ever popular Agricultural Centre marquee, as it explains the journey of food within its theme of ‘Plough to Plate’. From live demonstrations of milking cows and feeding calves to butchery demonstrations and ice-cream making, right through to the environmental matters that are considered in food production, the Agricultural Centre is a must see.
We know that the livestock and animals at ‘the Cheshire’ are for so many one, of the main reasons to visit and we know from feedback we never disappoint. As local and regional farmers compete to win the coveted title of ‘Supreme Champion, a wide range of cattle can be seen on show days, from the impressive mass of the Hereford Bull and British Blue to the petit Dexter’s and the familiar black and white of the Holstein dairy cattle.
Sheep, Goats, Pigs and Rare Breed livestock are always well represented at the show in the many competition classes. With the piglets proving particularly popular with visitors young and old alike.
From Shires to Shetlands, Show jumpers to Show ponies, equines are a strong feature of the show in all their spectacular splendor.
The Cheshire County Show Poultry section which takes place on the Tuesday only now enjoys championship status and is a must see for poultry enthusiasts.
Pigeons, Rabbits and Cavies aplenty can be found on the Wednesday only as they compete in the many classes held at the show.
Gun Dogs The prestigious Cheshire Show Dog section attracts over 2000 entries from across a vast array of breeds. Tuesday sees classes for Sporting Breeds only, whilst Wednesday is for Non-Sporting Breeds only.
Food lovers always flock to The Roberts Bakery Food Halls as they bring together local, regional and national producers and purveyors of fine food and drink to suit everyone’s tastes, whilst the Roberts Bakery Food Live Theatre enables visitors to enjoy some tremendous food edu-tainment from local Cheshire chefs and college students.
With the Cheese and Wine marquee alongside the Roberts Bakery Food Halls, it is just a short trip to see the delights of the many cheese producers and wine makers of the county and beyond.
The Rural Life area includes the Cheshire Federation of Women’s Institutes marquee which never fails to impress visitors with the high standard of the hundreds of entries to the many classes of crafts, ranging from cake making, floral art, produce making through to art and photography and much more. Celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2010, the Cheshire WI competition will this year carry the theme of ‘A Brilliant Past, A Bright Future’.
Adjoining the Cheshire WI marquee is the Cheshire Area of NAFAS, which hosts a prestigious series of competitions based around flower arranging. This year’s theme of ‘Leisure Time’ promises to provide some exciting floral interpretation to delight the many thousands of visitors to the show.
The Rural Life area also includes the Schools Out marquee which showcases some of the many schools and educational attractions across the county, whilst the NFU education marquee provides a fascinating insight into farming and includes the now famous and ever popular chick hatchery.
Conservation matters are presented within the Cheshire Landscape Trust marquee by the many organisations concerned with the conservation of Cheshire’s wildlife, unique landscape and habitat.
The schools musical entertainment programme, which takes place over the two days, is performed on the bandstand which is set within the heart of the rural life area and allows visitors time to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the show and relax on the grassy banks overlooking the bandstand.
Nuffield Tractor The Vintage Machinery section re-counts a bygone era with an extensive display of tractors, agricultural machinery, stationary engines, cars and commercial vehicles of yesteryear.
Country pursuits and traditional crafts come to life in the Cheshire West and Chester Countryside Experience Area. From falconry demonstrations, have ago Clay Shoot and Archery, to fly-fishing demonstrations and parades of hounds, it’s a real haven for country lovers.
The Main Ring programme is always designed to deliver tremendous thrills and spills but also showcases the best of the best in the impressive Grand Parade. Details of this years’ attractions can be found on the attractions page on the website.

Avenue Q is a musical about the lively and off-the-wall characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues: love, work, relationships, and, above all, just how are you supposed to pay the bills with a BA in English?

Avenue Q The Musical is the result of a collaboration between Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who began writing the show in 1999, originally thinking the idea would make a great TV series. Three years later it opened off-Broadway, and after extending four times at the Vineyard Theatre following rave reviews, it transferred to Broadway. After opening at the Golden Theatre in 2003, Avenue Q scooped the 2003 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical, and in 2004 the show won three Tony Awards for Best New Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. In 2006, Avenue Q The Musical travelled across the Atlantic, opening in London’s West End at the Noel Coward Theatre (formerly the Albery Theatre). Whilst in the West End, Avenue Q also enjoyed residencies at the Gielgud Theatre and Wyndham’s Theatre, where it ran until October 2010 ahead of the first UK tour in 2011.

Celebrity Chef Launches Pancake Race for Local Hospice
The North West’s original celebrity chef, David Mooney of the Lord Binning, has teamed up with St Luke’s (Cheshire) Hospice in Winsford to host a Charity Pancake Race to help raise funds.
Taking place on Shrove Tuesday, 21 February at 5pm, at the Lord Binning Pub and Kitchen in Kelsall, the St Luke’s Charity Pancake Race will see local residents, businesses, celebrities and sport stars come together to high-tail it around a tailor made ‘agility’ course in the Lord Binning’s scenic grounds with frying pan and lemons in hand!
With an evening of fun and frolics anticipated, all proceeds will be going to St Luke’s (Cheshire) Hospice, an adult hospice that cares for people from Mid and South Cheshire suffering from cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Registration costs just £25 for a team and £5 for an individual.
The winner or winning team of the entertaining charity pancake race will be awarded a meal at The Lord Binning. Everyone who participates will be able to indulge in some complimentary seasonal hospitality Lord Binning-style, in the form of delicious local mulled cider, as a thank you.
Also, a percentage of proceeds from the evening, will also be going straight to St Luke’s (Cheshire) Hospice.
To add some excitement to the evening, Luke, the London Routemaster Bus which was restored by Bentley for St Luke’s will be on-hand to look around; complete with hand stitched Bentley leather and trim installed by the skilled craftsmen of the Bentley Motors.

THE CHESTER ANTIQUES SHOW
An early painting of Chester's well-known Bridge Street by Louise Rayner (1832-1924), one of
Britain's most famous female artists, will be a major attraction at The Chester Antiques Show, at the
County Grandstand, Chester Racecourse, 9th - 12th February 2012.
The watercolour painting dates from the late 19th century and shows a typical bustling Victorian
street scene with horses and carts, people shopping and talking in the street. It is a fine historic scene
showing life as it really was. It is also notable for showing the corner with Eastgate Street, which has
still to be renovated with a second level, adding to the famous Chester Rows. The painting,
measuring 16 by 23 inches, is to be shown by Rowles Fine Art, the Welshpool gallery, with an
asking price of £29,000. A number of Louise Rayner's famous paintings can also be seen in the
Chester's Grosvenor Museum, including other views of Bridge Street.
Born in Matlock, Louise J Rayner (1832-1924) was a gifted and prolific artist who moved to
Chester from London in 1865 where she went on to teach and paint, producing numerous
fine watercolour studies of the city's streets and buildings. For over half a century, Louise was a
regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, the Old and the New Watercolour Societies, the Society
of British Artists, Suffolk Street Gallery, the British Institution, the Society of Female Artists, the
Dudley Gallery, the Birmingham Society of Artists and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. She is
very popular today and her paintings are constantly sought-after.
The Chester Antiques Show is enjoying a renaissance as fine art and antiques, vintage and collector?s
items are currently enjoying an upsurge of interest with people are now looking for alternative
investment opportunities. Paintings, period furniture, fine silver and jewellery are all proving
exceptionally popular and the Chester Show will offer a choice of fifty dealers specializing in a wide
range of selected pieces.
Also exhibiting will be Church Street Antiques from Altrincham, specialising in period furniture,
mirrors and accessories; Ian Anderson from Welshpool with oak and country furniture, Terry Robert
specialising in fine jewellery, and Phoenix Fine Art from Knutsford, with early English watercolours.
M.& N Rugs, also from Manchester, specialise in Persian carpets and silk rugs, John Newton from
East Yorkshire will be showing English and Continental porcelain, while Roger de Ville from
Staffordshire has English pottery. Steve Marsling from Lancashire will be showing late 20th and 21st
century pictures and Shapiro & Co. from London have 19th and early 20th century silver and
jewellery. All exhibits are vetted for quality and authenticity.

Soon to be entering their seventh year as the UK’s largest travelling vintage marketplace, Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair call at Chester this February, offering an unrivalled afternoon of time-travel at the Guildhall.
Founded in 2005 through love and a little frustration [“vintage was so expensive back then,” adds fair-founder and former TV stylist Judy Berger “that and I had nothing to wear!] the mantra behind the marketplace was a simple one; gather eclectic, exciting vintage traders and designer-makers from all over the UK, scrutinise them for affordability and then bring them together for a bustling vintage marketplace, all for one day. Pre-empting the public pang of conscience towards how our wares were made mid-way through the decade, Judy’s stood out as an ethical, eco-friendly and exciting antidote to an identikit highstreet; that said, fusing the old with the new, Judy’s remains the only vintage marketplace to be trend-lead, drawing in stylists, designers and celebrities alike, including Florence & the Machine, Amelia Lily, Daisy Lowe and Chloe Sevigny.
Dominating the catwalk, Highstreet and certainly our screens, vintage has never been more vogue. Through television shows such as Downton Abbey, Madmen and the 60s smash Pan Am, nostalgia is a necessity, offering a sense of escapism from the gloomy current climate. Showcasing six decades of affordable, trend-lead vintage, Judy’s has certainly felt a tremor, with more and more shoppers turning to us for old-world glamour that’s never old-hat. Showcasing independent, self-employed traders, Judy’s is a testament to success in a recession, offering a glimmer of hope for all those wanting to make it on their own. Exciting, independent and always affordable – shopping on a shoestring has never been so chic.
Now covering 32 cities and 6 major festivals, 2012 looks set to be a monolithic year for the vintage fair from Leeds. Twice marketplace curators of Wayne Hemingway’s ‘Vintage’ festivals [at both Goodwood & the South Bank] Judy’s are delighted to announce their very own day festival, Vintage Nation, coming to the shores of Brighton on Saturday 9th June. A celebration of 60 years of Britain at its best, the festival promises to be an exciting walk down memory lane [without counting the pennies]

Alexander’s have been established in Chester for almost 20 years. They host a variety of comedy, music and arts performances, including their regular Comedy Club on a Saturday night, ‘Unplugged’ open mic on Tuesday nights. The first and last Wednesday of the month is devoted to jazz, with the second Wednesday being an acoustic session and the third bringing a rock and blues jam. Alexander’s are based in Rufus Court, Chester.
