Free salsa taster sessions
14/12/2010 till 14/12/2010
Location: D'Meltin Pot, 31 Watergate Row, Chester
Get Dancing and Beat the January Blues! For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Like any form of exercise, it kickstarts your endorphins and, combined with the social aspect, it has a real ‘feel good’ factor for overall well-being and improved mental health. “This is just the time of year when people are thinking about trying something new to get in shape and branch out and either meet new people or enjoy a new activity with their partner or friends. We thought we’d make it even easier for everyone with our free salsa taster offer for January. If you’ve fancied trying a class but have never got round to it, there is now officially no excuse!” Concluded Mike: “Salsa is a great way to get out, get fit and have fun. You don’t need to bring a partner, just come along ready to enjoy yourself! We get a whole range of people coming to our classes from all ages and backgrounds, right the way from students through to one couple in their 70s, so everyone is genuinely welcome.” Salsa classes at D’ Meltin’ Pot are taught by Mike, who originates from Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean, Banderas from Cuba, the home of salsa, and Chester’s own homegrown talent, Lee, the North West’s amateur bachata dance champion (Bachata is a partner dance style originating from the Dominican Republic, also taught at D’ Meltin’ Pot). As well as salsa and bachata classes and parties, D’ Meltin’ Pot runs affordable dance classes in other styles including street dance and even pole dancing, and has a busy weekly programme of music and dance events including live bands, top DJs and a regular Wednesday jam session for budding musicians. Free salsa taster sessions
02/11/2010 till 02/11/2010
John Barrowman Tour
28/10/2010 till 28/10/2010
Location: Venue Cymru, Llandudno
John Barrowman, Britain's most successful - and comfortably Britain's best - all-round entertainer releases his third solo album, the self-titled John Barrowman this week on Arista and has now announced a brand new 23 date UK Tour including a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
John Barrowman is easily one of the most familiar faces on British television and the West End stage. Best known for playing Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC series’ Torchwood and Doctor Who, he has also been a judge on the award-winning BBC1 entertainment shows How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, Any Dream Will Do and I’d Do Anything. More recently he has hosted his own primetime Saturday night TV extravaganza, Tonight's The Night and graced London’s West End as Zaza in the Olivier Award-winning La Cage Aux Folles. John Barrowman recently announced he has accepted a role in the hit TV show Desperate Housewives and will start filming imminently.
John Barrowman is perhaps his most personal album to date – the album he has always wanted to make. As with 2007's Another Side and 2008's Music Music Music, it is a masterful, evocative and uplifting journey into perhaps the man's first love, musical theatre, comprising his favourite moments from Cats, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys and Mack and Mabel to name a few. The album is filled with instantly familiar classics - Memory, The Winner Takes It All, My Eyes Adored You - to the less immediately familiar, such as So Close, a spine-tingling duet with Jodie Prenger lifted from the recent Disney movie Enchanted and chosen for his niece Clare. Also included is a beautiful version of You’ll Never Walk Alone from Carousel, a song which his mother sang to him as a child. Every track holds an emotional relevance for John.
Recorded exclusively for the iTunes album, The Doctor and I, about Captain Jack’s relationship with Doctor Who, is an imaginative re-working of The Wizard And I from the musical Wicked.
John Barrowman is representative of a man at the height of his powers, someone who can fill a song with the same chutzpah and style that he can a role on the West End stage. Simply put, he has never sounded better. 2010 is already promising to be a remarkable year for John Barrowman with a number of major projects confirmed. Watch him go global!

Every town has its local trendy cocktail bar where everyone wants to be seen, from the local check-out girls to the chinless wonders, from the yuppies to the local lads tittering at the thought of a `long comfortable screw'. We are given a wickedly funny glimpse of this world by the four long-suffering waitresses who work there. Rushed off their feet, underpaid and overworked, they try to smile and help the difficult customers whilst coping with their own personal problems. A fascinating and often hilarious view of the reality which lurks behind the plastic palms and the pina coladas.

Free salsa taster sessions
05/10/2010 till 05/10/2010
Free salsa taster sessions
14/09/2010 till 14/09/2010
Charity Fete
12/09/2010 till 12/09/2010
Location: Boughton Hall, Filkins Lane, Boughton, Chester
All welcome at Charity Fête
In a bid to strengthen ties with the local community, residents and staff at Boughton Hall are inviting groups from Chester to get involved in its inaugural Charity Fête.
The grounds of Boughton Hall are to be opened up for the family event on Sunday, 12 September, between 12am and 4pm. Groups wishing to raise funds for their own cause are invited to book a stall or space for their activity.
Boughton Hall in Filkins Lane, Chester, has been transformed over the last two years into a luxury community of private apartments with communal facilities for the over 55s.
“With more residents moving in all the time, the community is now coming to life,” said Hattie Bacon, marketing and sales manager. “And what could mark the development of a community better than a village fête?”
The Grade II Listed Hall itself, which is at the centre of village life and houses a number of apartments and many of the facilities, has undergone extensive refurbishment after being used as a Barnardo’s Home for many years. The charity joined forces with Enterprise Retirement Living Limited to breathe new life into the site. The charity connection is still strong with the village staging a number of events throughout the year to boost the charity’s coffers.
Money raised by residents and staff at the fête will go directly to the charity.
“We’re organising stalls, entertainment and refreshments so there should be lots going on for visitors to enjoy,” said Hattie.

Open Day at St Mary's Church, Thornton Le Moors
11/09/2010 till 11/09/2010
Location: St Mary's Church, Thornton Le Moors, Nr Chester
Nationally Important Building Re-opens
Open Day at St. Mary’s Church, Thornton-le-Moors, Near Chester
Saturday 11th September - Noon until 4pm
An important medieval church is about to officially re-open its doors after The Churches Conservation Trust, the country’s largest owner of churches that are no longer used for regular worship, has spent over £350,000 on much-needed repairs.
Grade 1 listed St Mary’s, in the lovely village of Thornton-le-Moors, is a nationally important building and has been loved and cared for by generations of villagers. The striking red sandstone church was closed for a number of years until it was vested in the care of the Trust, who took it over in July 2009 and immediately set to work replacing the leaking slates, repairing the tower and overhauling the lighting and electrical supply.
The church will officially re-open its doors as part of Heritage Open Weekend at 12 noon on Saturday 11th September. The Conservation Team at the Trust, the architect and the main contractors will be on hand to explain exactly what has been done to the building and will give informal guided tours throughout the afternoon.
Peter Wilkinson of the Chester Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers will be in attendance with a display of bell ringing.
A short service of celebration will take place at 4pm.
The Churches Conservation Trust is keen to see the church used for a variety of community events; their churches are regular venues for concerts and exhibitions all over the country.
Tim Charlson, Operations Manager for their North Region said, “I am absolutely delighted that the church is so important to so many people. It’s obvious that the building can become a centre for community use.”

American Civil War Weekend
11/09/2010 till 12/09/2010
Location: The Old Hall, Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire
American Civil War Weekend at the Old Hall
See the real North/South divide played out at Tatton’s Old Hall on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th September. Except these opposing parties are the northern Yankees and the deep south Confederates, who will be setting up camp at the Old Hall for the annual American Civil War Weekend.
The romance and drama of this most evocative of periods will be brought to life by re-enactors from the American Civil War Society (UK), the largest such society in the UK. Over 150 members of the group, of all ages, will recreate an authentic camp of regimented tents, demonstrating military and domestic life in the American Civil War.
Visitors will experience the sights, sounds and smells of a military camp – from camp cooking over open fires to the acrid black powder fired from Civil War weapons. They will be able to learn how to make bullets and how people trained, drilled and coped with living in such close quarters, away from home.
But don’t expect it to be all amicable. Prepare to experience an exciting skirmish and drill display with cannon and full battle equipment. Some of the female members have even been known to dress up and join the ranks for the battle!
Mick Ricketts, Old Hall Steward commented “these are, after all, two armies on campaign, so a major part of the weekend is this exciting, colourful and noisy spectacle. Just one thing to choose: are you flying the Yankee or Confederate flag?”
The North West has its own close association with the American Civil War. It is just over 145 years since Lancashire cotton workers refused to handle southern cotton which had been gathered by slave labour, despite the knowledge that this would cause great hardship to its workers. Abraham Lincoln thanked the cotton workers in an 1863 address “I hail this interchange of sentiments … whatever else may happen, whatever misfortune may befall your country or my own, the peace and friendship which now exists between the two nations will be, as it shall be my desire to make them, perpetual."
Lincoln Square in Manchester was so named to acknowledge this close relationship and a statue of the President was erected there in 1919.
Join us for a glimpse of life in this romantic period – who knows, there might even be a Rhett Butler or a Scarlett O’Hara amongst the re-enactors (one can always hope…).

‘Best of British’

Iona & Andy in conjunction with Venue Cymru are pleased to announce the line up for the 16th North Wales Country Music Festival, taking place in the lovely Victorian seaside resort of Llandudno this September.
This remains the only major theatre based country music festival in the UK calendar giving artists the chance to shine in one of the finest entertainment venues in the UK. “We are so lucky to have the support of Conwy County Borough Council and the venue management which in turn enables us to book the very best country acts year after year” says Andy Boggie who with wife Iona is responsible for booking the acts, compering and running the shows. Over the years they have welcomed such great names as The Bellamy Brothers, Br549, Gail Davies, Heather Miles, Gretchen Peters, Peter Rowan, Chip Taylor and Kathy Chiavola amongst many others from the States and home grown stars like Charlie Landsborough, Joe Brown, Raymond Froggatt and Mary Duff.
Opening this year’s weekend will be festival organisers Iona and Andy who will be performing some old and new material. Joining them in the Friday night concert will be festival regular BJ Locklin bringing his own brand of music and humour and the 5 piece English country band Bob Morgan and Western Reunion.
The Saturday concert will feature Ireland’s first lady of country music Susan McCann with her band. From Scotland we welcome John Miller and the Country Casuals and returning to the festival by popular demand the English singing sisters The Haleys.
As well as the theatre shows in the evening, Ben’s Bar returns from 12pm on Saturday afternoon. Running Ben’s Bar are Phil Lloyd and Pete Redfern and will be a relaxed afternoon of country music and chat. This event will take place in the Orme Suite, with food and drink available at the bar.

The Rise & Fall of Little Voice - 9th to 18th September 2010
This is a funny, sentimental and savage play that combines comedy, and pathos in equal measure. Little Voice's only comfort in life is the LP collection and in the privacy of her bedroom she learns to sing like the stars he revered - such as Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and Shirley Bassey . A dodgy local music talent scout called Ray Say hears Little Voice impersonating various famous singers and realizes that there is gold in her voice. Soon she has undergone the transformation from Ugly Duckling and is being introduced as a glittering star on the stage in a local Northern working men's club. But the whirlwind rush for success breaks Little Voice's soul and voice, dashing Ray's hopes for gold and glory, and her mother's hopes for a long term future with Ray. Only Billy, the shy young telephone engineer, can save Little Voice and give her the courage to speak and sing in her own voice.

TELL ME ON A SUNDAY
CLAIRE SWEENEY STARS IN ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER AND DON BLACK’S MASTERPIECE OF MUSICAL THEATRE
“Combines elements of celebrity fall-out and Sex & The City. THERE IS NO ONE WRITING STUFF AS GOOD AS THIS IN MODERN MUSICAL THEATRE” Daily Express (2003 West End production)
A rare opportunity to see Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s TELL ME ON A SUNDAY. Now remodelled for Claire Sweeney by the masters of musical theatre, with an exclusive new song I Still Believe in Love, this is the definitive version of the classic musical for 2010.
Originally conceived for television starring Marti Webb, TELL ME ON A SUNDAY has been performed by legendary musical theatre stars Elaine Paige, Sarah Brightman and Denise Van Outen. Now Claire Sweeney takes on this celebrated role which features a wonderful score and the chart topping hits Take That Look Off Your Face, Unexpected Song and the title track Tell Me on a Sunday.
TELL ME ON A SUNDAY charts the romantic misadventures of a young English girl newly arrived in New York. Brimming with optimism, she seeks success, companionship and, of course, love. But as she weaves her way through the maze of the city and her own anxieties, frustrations and heartaches she begins to wonder whether - in fact - she's been looking for love in all the wrong places.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s numerous awards include 7 Tonys, 3 Grammys, 7 Olivier’s, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, 2 Emmys and the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre. Don Black is an Oscar winning lyrist (Born Free) and penned numerous James Bond theme tunes and chart hits, including Michael Jackson’s Ben and Lulu’s ‘To Sir With Love’.

The Italian Connection
01/09/2010 till 01/09/2010
Location: Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 6QN
Pre-booking essential
Since the advent of the ‘Grand Tour’ in the late seventeenth century, British tourists have been exploring the continent and beyond, and returning with mementoes of their
travels. During the time of Samuel Egerton (1711-1780) of Tatton Park, this memorabilia was less cheap straw donkey; more coveted Italian master.
Learn more about the Italian influence on the gardens and Mansion collection at a lunchtime lecture, The Italian Connection, on Wednesday 1st September 2010 at Tatton Park. The lecture, in the striking Mansion Entrance Hall, will be led by Caroline Schofield, Tatton’s Mansion and Collections Manager and Sam Youd, Gardens Manager.
Caroline will be focusing on Tatton’s stunning collection of Italian furniture, books and paintings (including two particularly beautiful Canalettos, depicting the Grand Canal).
The Mansion collection was greatly enhanced by Samuel Egerton, who inherited Tatton in 1738, on the death of his brother. Samuel is a key figure in Egerton family history and spent a number of years in Venice, apprenticed to Joseph Smith, an English merchant and picture dealer. Samuel had a collector’s ‘eye’; a skill which clearly ran in the family as Wilbraham, 2nd Baron and Earl Egerton of Tatton (1832-1909) was also a keen collector and purchased the majority of Early Italian paintings now displayed in The Egerton Picture Cabinet.
The Italian style did not stop at the Mansion door. One of the most picturesque areas of Tatton is the Italian Garden, commissioned and completed around 1890 (during the ownership of Wilbraham, as above). The garden was designed by the celebrated architect, Joseph Paxton, who was also responsible for the design of the Fernery and Conservatory.
This terraced garden leads down to a beautiful balustrade and vista of the parkland, and is typical of the Italian style of the time. At the heart of the garden is a grand statue of Neptune rising from the water, which is believed to have been brought back from Venice especially for this spot in the early twentieth century.
Sam will also draw on the link between the famous Venetian adventurer, Marco Polo and the Chinese influence on Italian gardens. Many Italian gardens have a Chinese feature, a reference to Marco Polo’s travels through the heartland of China and the East. Tatton’s Italian Garden has a number of Chinese seats, however, as Sam commented “to hear the full story, come listen to the lecture! The Italian style is timeless and Tatton’s garden a beautiful and virtually unchanged area of the landscaped gardens. It will be very interesting to make these very visual links between the historic Mansion and Garden collection.”
Caroline Schofield commented “The art and architecture of Italy, so influenced by that of the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations, was clearly embraced by the Egertons here at Tatton and can be seen everywhere you look. We hope to share a little of that Italian style on Wednesday 1st September.”

BLOOD BROTHERS
Starring Niki Evans (X Factor) as Mrs Johnstone
Voted “MOST POPULAR BRITISH MUSICAL OF ALL TIME” by New York Times readers
Following sell out seasons in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Japan, the international smash hit musical BLOOD BROTHERS continues to tour the UK. Hailed as one of the Best musical of all time, BLOOD BROTHERS has triumphed across the globe. This epic tale of Liverpool life has been running in London’s West End, since July 1988 and touring the UK since 1995.
BLOOD BROTHERS tells the captivating and moving story of twin boys separated at birth, only to be re-united by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. The memorable score includes A Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven hungry children she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet.

A sensational cast, incredible show-stopping music, remarkable staging and five star performances make BLOOD BROTHERS an enthralling night of entertainment.
WILLY RUSSELL is undeniably one of this country’s leading contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include EDUCATING RITA and SHIRLEY VALENTINE. EDUCATING RITA, originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, enjoyed a two year run in the West End and was made into a movie starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters. Elizabeth Gaskell's Cheshire
30/08/2010 till 31/10/2010
Location: The Mansion, Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire
Dig out your bonnets and unwrap your shawls!
Cranford devotees are invited to explore an enlightening new exhibition which opens in the Mansion at Tatton Park on Monday 30 August.
Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cheshire, curated by historian Joan Leach MBE, explores the literary and personal connections between the celebrated author and the local area. The exhibition is just one of a number of events and celebrations taking place across Cheshire and Manchester to mark the bicentenary of the birth of ‘Mrs Gaskell’.
Interest in the writer (1810-1865) has increased significantly in recent months with the BBC’s award-winning adaptations of her novel, Cranford, based on the market town of Knutsford, Cheshire.
Born in Chelsea on 29 September 1810, Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (née Stevenson), moved to Knutsford, her ‘dear, adopted native town’ in infancy after the death of her mother. Here she lived with her aunt Hannah Lumb, in a large red-brick house overlooking Knutsford Heath.
Gaskell spent much of her childhood in Knutsford, drawing inspiration, for Cranford in particular, from the characters, events and local gossip of the pretty market town. She moved to Manchester (where she wrote most of her work) on her marriage to William Gaskell, the assistant minister of Cross Street Unitarian Chapel in Manchester.
Although perhaps known primarily today for her novel of ‘domestic life’ Cranford (1853), and her biography of her friend and contemporary, Charlotte Brontë (1857) other works such as Mary Barton (1848) and North and South (1854) explored complex social issues and the lives of industrial workers in northern Victorian England.
Tatton’s exhibition focuses on the connections between Gaskell, her work and the local surrounding areas of Knutsford, Tatton Park, Dunham, Styal, Sandlebridge, Lower Peover, Tabley and Capesthorne. The exhibition draws on her own impressions of these local beauty spots, from her letters and writings, and also explores where local landscapes and indeed characters have provided inspiration for her work.
Lynn Podmore, Learning and Visitor Services Manager commented “We are delighted to have marked the bicentenary of Elizabeth Gaskell’s birth by working alongside local historian Joan Leach. Elizabeth once advised a would-be writer to be an ‘auditor and spectator of the scenes’ and it is clear that she gained inspiration for her own writing by this method. The variety of influences was bountiful in nineteenth century Cheshire. She focused on characters and places in and around the town of Knutsford, as well as the local gentry in their stately homes, the mill workers in industrial Manchester and the beauty of the Cheshire landscape. Her literary legacy lives on to this day and has been made even more popular by recent filming of her work, such as the BBC’s adaptation of Cranford.”
The exhibition is also open to Mansion Christmas visitors during December.
Opening Times: Monday 30 August to Sunday 31 October (closed all other Mondays). Normal Mansion times and prices apply. Mansion open in High Season (until Sunday 3rd October) Tuesday to Sunday 1pm-5pm (last entry 4pm) and in Low Season (Monday 4th October to Friday 25th March 2011) closed, except during October open Tuesday-Sunday 12pm-4pm, last entry 3pm.

Viking Sunday at the Old Hall
15/08/2010 till 15/08/2010
Location: Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 6QN
Brace yourselves for a Viking Invasion!
Tatton’s Old Hall is bracing itself for Viking invasion, over one thousand years since norsemen first crossed the Cheshire borders. And these ones are no less terrifying!
On Sunday 15th August, The Vikings! Of Middle England will be staging a dynamic and exciting re-enactment event in the atmospheric grounds of Tatton’s Tudor Old Hall. Witness the clash of steel and hear the smash of axe on shield as these hardened warriors demonstrate Viking combat skills. The Vikings! of Middle England are renowned for their historical authenticity and their ‘realistic, exciting and entertaining battle displays’.
But it’s not all about the battle and ‘bloodshed’. Around 30 re-enactors will be setting up an authentic Viking camp at the Old Hall, demonstrating the domestic side of Viking life with authentic cooking over open fires, wood-cutting, coin-minting, spinning, dyeing and weaving activities.
A Viking Longship will be washing up on Tatton’s shores, especially for this event, from Viking Longship Experience. Sturdy Viking sailing ships were used by Norsemen to travel as far as Constantinople and Newfoundland. Russell Scott from the Viking Longship Experience will be demonstrating the skills needed to power these extraordinary boats. Other activities and demonstrations will include making Viking ship coins, casting fishing nets and a mock naval battle for children.
A number of other displays will keep young and older visitors entertained. In the early afternoon there will be a magnificent falconry display from Gauntlet Birds of Prey, who will show ravens, vultures and other birds of prey guaranteed to thrill. Finally, visitors also have the opportunity to try on armour and try their own expertise with an archer’s longbow (small charge).
Mick Ricketts, Old Hall Steward commented “Viking Sunday is one of my favourite re-enactment events in the Old Hall’s calendar. The Vikings! Of Middle England come to Tatton Old Hall with a justified reputation for realism and some notoriety. Channel 5 called them ‘too realist to show’ but for a family audience they will temper it a little! We’re sure they will add an exciting new dimension to the day.”
Normal Park entry of £5 per car applies.
Additional small charge for try on armour and have a go archery.

Fun Dog Show at the Farm
15/08/2010 till 15/08/2010
Location: Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire WA16 6QN
A Date for the Doggy Diary!
Calling all daring doggies! Tatton’s Doggy Olympics returns on Sunday 15th August with the annual and ever popular Fun Dog Show.
The Farm’s three resident dogs extend an invitation to the sleek and the scruffy for this very special event. With ten novelty classes, from ‘Waggiest Tail’ to ‘Saddest Eyes’, ‘Best Veteran’ to ‘Best Rescue’, there’s an opportunity for every dog to strut their stuff.
Special rosettes are awarded for 1st to 6th place in each class so few doggies go home empty pawed!
Competitive canines are already clearing space in their kennels for the gleaming ‘Harry Smith Memorial Trophy’ for Show Champion. Not least amongst these are Bella (a Golden Labrador), Kip (a Border Collie) and Lyra (a Lurcher). These three farm beauties all live on site at Tatton and are owned by three Farm staff members (Alex, Jayne and Elly respectively!).
The delightful doggies, well known to all Farm visitors, have already been quality testing the ‘Fun Agility Course’. This timed event really get tails wagging and features challenging weaving poles, tunnels, jumps and much more. Jayne Chapman, Farm Manager commented “Although our dogs can’t take part in the competitive element, they really enjoying having a go – and there’s a fair amount of rivalry between this cheeky trio!”
One of the hardest classes to judge and guaranteed to bring out the softest of puppy dog eyes is ‘Dog the Judge Would Most Like to Take Home’. Christie Hospital Marathon Appeal
17/02/2010 till 10/10/2010
Location: London and Chicago
Chris Young will be running the Virgin London Marathon 2010 on April 25th and the Chicago Marathon 2010 on October 10th with one key objective on his mind, raising as much money as he can for a charitable cause very close to his heart, The Christie Hospital in Manchester.
Chris has been running for fun for many years. It was following the death of his father Philip Young — resident of Bunbury near Tarporley for over 40 years — in July 2009 that he decided to combine his love of running with something positive in his Dad’s memory.
Chris tells of the exceptional care that his father received while at The Christie, and his goal of raising as much as he can for the hospital.
“I visited my Dad on countless occasions in The Christie, and was privileged to see at first hand what an amazing place it is. When my Dad passed away, I applied to the hospital to see if I could run the London Marathon on their behalf. I was recently honoured to receive one of only 15 golden bond places that the hospital has to distribute nation-wide, and am attempting to raise as much as I possibly can for the cause.”
Chris’s goal is to raise in excess of £25,000 for the hospital, and he has numerous money raising initiatives that he is planning to action.
He has his own charity web-site where donations can be made on-line at www.justgiving.com/
ChristopherEYoung, and collection points and sponsorship forms can also be found at numerous businesses in the North West, all of which are listed on the website.
Chris says “From a personal point of view I would like to finish the Marathon in about 3 and a half hours so I will be putting in a lot of miles over the next few months. But my primary goal is fund raising, and I would like to thank anyone who feels they can help.”

Climbing Kili for conservation - Help!
01/01/2010 till 12/09/2010
Location: Rhino maniacs based at Chester Zoo
Climbing Kili for conservation…
On 12 September 2010, a team of Chester Zoo staff will begin their ascent up the 19,340 feet of the world’s largest free-standing mountain – Mount Kilimanjaro – in aid of Black Rhino conservation.
The team, dubbed the Rhino Maniacs, are doing the challenge in their own time, including all the training and fundraising, to help raise awareness and money for the Zoo’s Eastern Black Rhino conservation programme (registered charity no. 306077).
Team member and Rhino Keeper, Helen Massey said: “There are only around 700 Eastern Black Rhinos left in the wild. The work that Chester Zoo does both here in the UK and out in the wild is important in ensuring the survival of the species.
“The Rhino Maniacs climbing Kilimanjaro is a great way for us to tell people about these amazing animals. I am lucky enough to work with Eastern Black Rhinos at the Zoo, and it is devastating to imagine that they could become extinct in the wild.”
With Rhino Mania - the mass public arts event being delivered by Chester Renaissance and Wild In Art, stampeding through Chester next year, the challenge comes at a time when Black Rhino conservation will be brought to the forefront of people’s minds across the city. Rhino Mania has already pledged their support for the Rhino Maniacs and their mascot Rascal will be joining the Maniacs up Kilimanjaro.
“We need as much support as possible and are looking for individuals, community groups and businesses to support us in any way they can” said Helen.
”From cash donations, gifts in kind and organising events on our behalf to simply helping to spread the word and generate awareness - any support people can offer will make a huge difference to us.”
