For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Like any form of exercise, it kickstarts your endorphins and, combined with the social aspect, it has a real ‘feel good’ factor for overall well-being and improved mental health. “This is just the time of year when people are thinking about trying something new to get in shape and branch out and either meet new people or enjoy a new activity with their partner or friends. We thought we’d make it even easier for everyone with our free salsa taster offer for January. For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Like any form of exercise, it kickstarts your endorphins and, combined with the social aspect, it has a real ‘feel good’ factor for overall well-being and improved mental health. “This is just the time of year when people are thinking about trying something new to get in shape and branch out and either meet new people or enjoy a new activity with their partner or friends. We thought we’d make it even easier for everyone with our free salsa taster offer for January. John Barrowman, Britain's most successful - and comfortably Britain's best - all-round entertainer releases his third solo album, the self-titled John Barrowman this week on Arista and has now announced a brand new 23 date UK Tour including a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

John Barrowman is easily one of the most familiar faces on British television and the West End stage. Best known for playing Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC series’ Torchwood and Doctor Who, he has also been a judge on the award-winning BBC1 entertainment shows How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, Any Dream Will Do and I’d Do Anything. More recently he has hosted his own primetime Saturday night TV extravaganza, Tonight's The Night and graced London’s West End as Zaza in the Olivier Award-winning La Cage Aux Folles.  John Barrowman recently announced he has accepted a role in the hit TV show Desperate Housewives and will start filming imminently.

For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Like any form of exercise, it kickstarts your endorphins and, combined with the social aspect, it has a real ‘feel good’ factor for overall well-being and improved mental health. “This is just the time of year when people are thinking about trying something new to get in shape and branch out and either meet new people or enjoy a new activity with their partner or friends. For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Like any form of exercise, it kickstarts your endorphins and, combined with the social aspect, it has a real ‘feel good’ factor for overall well-being and improved mental health. “This is just the time of year when people are thinking about trying something new to get in shape and branch out and either meet new people or enjoy a new activity with their partner or friends. All welcome at Charity Fête

In a bid to strengthen ties with the local community, residents and staff at Boughton Hall are inviting groups from Chester to get involved in its inaugural Charity Fête.
 
The grounds of Boughton Hall are to be opened up for the family event on Sunday, 12 September, between 12am and 4pm. Groups wishing to raise funds for their own cause are invited to book a stall or space for their activity.
 
Boughton Hall in Filkins Lane, Chester, has been transformed over the last two years into a luxury community of private apartments with communal facilities for the over 55s.
 
“With more residents moving in all the time, the community is now coming to life,” said Hattie Bacon, marketing and sales manager. “And what could mark the development of a community better than a village fête?”
 
The Grade II Listed Hall itself, which is at the centre of village life and houses a number of apartments and many of the facilities, has undergone extensive refurbishment after being used as a Barnardo’s Home for many years. The charity joined forces with Enterprise Retirement Living Limited to breathe new life into the site. The charity connection is still strong with the village staging a number of events throughout the year to boost the charity’s coffers.
 
Money raised by residents and staff at the fête will go directly to the charity.
 
“We’re organising stalls, entertainment and refreshments so there should be lots going on for visitors to enjoy,” said Hattie.

The Rise & Fall of Little Voice - 9th to 18th September 2010

This is a funny, sentimental and savage play that combines comedy, and pathos in equal measure. Little Voice's only comfort in life is the LP collection and in the privacy of her bedroom she learns to sing like the stars he revered - such as Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and Shirley Bassey . A dodgy local music talent scout called Ray Say hears Little Voice impersonating various famous singers and realizes that there is gold in her voice. Soon she has undergone the transformation from Ugly Duckling and is being introduced as a glittering star on the stage in a local Northern working men's club. But the whirlwind rush for success breaks Little Voice's soul and voice, dashing Ray's hopes for gold and glory, and her mother's hopes for a long term future with Ray. Only Billy, the shy young telephone engineer, can save Little Voice and give her the courage to speak and sing in her own voice.

For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Like any form of exercise, it kickstarts your endorphins and, combined with the social aspect, it has a real ‘feel good’ factor for overall well-being and improved mental health. “This is just the time of year when people are thinking about trying something new to get in shape and branch out and either meet new people or enjoy a new activity with their partner or friends. We thought we’d make it even easier for everyone with our free salsa taster offer for January. Brownpaper Productions return for a summer musical that promises to be another Forum sell-out.

Following on from their incredible sell-out show at the end of last year, the team have expanded the cast to include fifteen extremely talented young individuals who will deliver what promises to be yet another West End standard production.

Directed by Phil Cross (Oliver - West End) and Dani Fray (BBC1 - Grange Hill), the 'This Is My Musical' series will finally conclude with a summer spectacular that Brownpaper believe is their most challenging but most stunning creation yet.

His theatre credits include the plays Neville’s Island, The Safari Party, The Flint Street Nativity and the Olivier Award winning musical Our House.   

CALENDAR GIRLS is directed by Olivier Award winner HAMISH McCOLL. Hamish is probably best known as half of the double act THE RIGHT SIZE, who from 1988 created a unique style of comic theatre culminating in the smash hit The Play What I Wrote which won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment. Other credits include director for French and Saunders’ farewell tour Still Alive and the screenplay for Mr Bean’s Holiday.  Design is by ROB JONES whose recent credits include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of The Sound of Music at the London Palladium and Rock’n’Roll in London and New York. Peppa Pig is currently one of TV’s top-rated children’s shows and a BAFTA Award winner. Now, for the first time ever, she has her own live stage show. Peppa Pig’s Party opened on 30 September in Exeter and played to 7 venues in autumn 2009. Now in 2010 this extensive UK tour continues to 60 theatres across the country from 4 February.

Many creative talents have come together to assemble this exciting new production where the main characters are played by puppets with visible puppeteers.
•    Nigel Plaskitt is Puppetry Consultant for the show and is, arguably, the UK’s most experienced puppet specialist. His many credits include Monkey  (who appears alongside Al played by Johnny Vegas) in the current award-winning commercials for PG Tips; Spitting Image; and the current West End hit show Avenue Q.
•    The music comes from LazyTown’s highly talented composer Mani Svavarsson whose songs are well known to children and parents.
•    Director Richard Lewis (who has also adapted Peppa Pig for stage) has many acclaimed children’s stage shows to his credit, including Fimbles and the two LazyTown Live! tours (2007 – 2008 and 2009).

Peppa Pig’s Party is produced by the team (Fiery Angel and Limelight Productions) behind the recent tours of LazyTown Live! and Roald Dahl’s The BFG.

Peppa is a playful little pig who lives with her little brother George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig. Orchid Event at Chester Zoo

ORCHID expert Steve Manning will be sharing his love of these exotic plants at a Chester Zoo event.

Steve, who has donated more than 1,000 plants from his orchid collection to the zoo, has just published a book entitled Discovering New World Orchids, which covers many aspects of South and Central American orchids and includes several amusing yet true stories regarding their discovery.

Specialising in mainly smaller orchids, Steve, from Nantwich, has travelled extensively in search of his beloved plants, visiting Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Cuba, Costa Rica and Venezuela. He has written numerous orchid articles and has given talks to an International Conservation Congress in Cuba, a British Orchid Congress, a European Orchid Congress and a World Orchid Congress in Vancouver.

Now, as he publishes his first book on the subject, Steve will be sharing his lifelong passion with Chester Zoo visitors.

Euphoric music fans are preparing for one of the summer’s highlights as Dub Pistols have announced that they will be bringing their electrifying live show to Chester on Thursday August 5th. Considered by many to be one of the standout bands of Glastonbury 2010, Telfords Warehouse will play host to the wildly entertaining London/Brooklyn collective.

Dub Pistols have gained acclaim and notoriety in equal measure for their unique brand of hip hop, dub and ska, manifested in an unrelenting punk attitude. They are consistently considered one of the finest live acts in the UK.

Their four critically-lauded albums have featured collaborations with Specials founder Terry Hall, reggae legends Horace Andy and Gregory Isaacs and UK rap stalwarts Rodney P. and Blade. Will Young began his pop journey as the first and most atypical winner of the, now global phenomena, Pop Idol.  Over the duration of four multi-platinum albums, countless hits and close to a decade in the music industry Will has come to occupy a unique space in British pop culture.  He has been the star of a Southbank special, a Stephen Frears movie, the award winning Mrs. Henderson Presents, and a sell-out Noel Coward revival. One of the most popular race days at Chester Racecourse is soon to return to the Roodee, much to the delight of children and adults alike who will be flooding onto the open course for the 16th annual Family Fun Day on Sunday 1st August.

Year on the year the event grows and this year it is expected to be more popular than ever with crowds of over 40,000 expected at the racecourse. Clutching BBQs and picnic hampers and with happy smiles on their faces, thousands will make their way onto the open course for a fabulous day of fun.

For racegoers there is a fantastic day ahead too, with buy one get one free offers on County Stand badges and Tattersall tickets, there is every opportunity to watch the six races scheduled for the day as well as place bets and sample the many excellent bars and restaurants within the course.

However, it’s the children who are in for a real treat as this year there will be even more free entertainment for little ones to enjoy. There will be donkey rides, face painters, Mr Alexander Travelling Circus, a climbing wall, bouncy castle and even human table football to keep children amused all day long.

Panasonic UK have organised a summer season of experiential events promoting the new Lumix G2 camera across the country. The campaign has been designed to allow visitors to experience the brand new Panasonic Lumix G2 camera first hand at a number of top UK attractions.

As part of a UK wide initiative with Bike Club, which is a consortium Project between UK Youth, CTC and ContinYou. Nigel Mansell is undertaking what is probably one of the biggest challenges of his life to ride 1,200 miles around Britain in 13 days with out a rest day to promote UK Youth's 'Positive About Youth' campaign and get communities excited about cycling.

On the 22nd July, Nigel Mansell will be embarking on a massive 1,200 miles cycle challenge around Britain, which he intends to complete in 13 days without a days rest. Accompanying him on the challenge is Magnus Backstedt, retired Tour de France racer, Nigel's two sons Leo and Greg, and a small team of sponsored riders supporting their aims. Nigel set himself this challenge to raise the public's awareness of the charity, UK Youth, of which he is president, to mark the centenary year of the charity and to promote UK Youth's 'Positive About Youth' campaign, celebrating the achievements youth groups and young people around the UK with the aim to change peoples perceptions of our countries youth.

Behind the scenes, Ross Adams Bike Club officer has organized a fantastic event together with Live!, New sensee, CTC and other partners to create a day that will be enjoyable for all, especially those less-abled in the community. As Nigel and his team of riders complete their 100 miles of intense riding they will arrive at an event that highlights all that is being done within the region to work with children and young people, with and without disabilities, The aim is to show that cycling is really for all and highlight the hard work carried out by local clubs and those who give their time freely to help the county's young.

When asked about the event Ross Adams said,


  "What we do here is pretty special for our local young people and to help them build and enjoy their lives. To have the opportunity to not only present what we do to one of our countries Iconic motorsport heroes and a cycling legend will be fantastic as we know how important supporting our country's young is to them and it is a great way for us to truly show the region all that  Bike Club, Live, New Sensee, CTC and other clubs actually do."

On the Day all the activities are FREE to attend and everyone is welcome.

Chester GO-Ride, providing cycle skills training for young people
North Shore will be bringing a challenging range of BMX Obstacles for all ages to test their skills
Walton Hall Cycle Museum will have on display a range vintage bicycles
There will be adapted Bikes for use on the purpose built circuit
Entertainment in the form of African Drumming from the Volunteers at New Scene, who learnt their skills from travelling to Africa and helping their communities.
Nigel and the team will also be presenting awards to the young people of New Scene, for their outstanding achievements, both past and present.
All young people taking part in the activities will need to have a consent form completed by a responsible adult prior to taking part and can be picked up from LIVE! New Scene Youth Centre or completed on the day.

The Nigel Mansell UK Youth Cycle Challenge

At 56, Nigel Mansell OBE, wanted to do something momentous to support the centenary campaign 'Positive About Youth' (www.positiveaboutyouth.org). The 1,200-mile Challenge is aimed at getting the media and the public to support the campaign and to change any negative perceptions towards young people. With over 1 million young people out of work and not in education, there is a real need to support them and show that we, as adults believe in their future and also highlight the many young people who do so much, for charities, looking after their family members through sickness and regularly volunteer their time to help others. UK Youths core aims are to Raise young people's aspirations, Realise their potential and get their achievements Recognised.

This is not your normal sponsored bike ride, to put the challenge into perspective - the Tour de France covers 2,200 miles, which the riders complete in 21 days AND take a two-day rest in the middle! Throughout the challenge the team will attend local events organised across the countr and get people out on their bikes, have fun and stay fit, providing both the young and the old with the opportunity to "GET INVOLVED" and find out why cycling is so much fun. 

"This is UK Youth's centenary year and I want to do something really exacting to mark it." said Nigel.  "We are one of the largest youth charities in the UK and every day we challenge young people to do all sorts of new and exciting things in order to raise their aspirations and realize their potential - so I want to do something demanding as well and in doing so encourage everyone to be more supportive of young people at a time when they are suffering more than most in the recession."

Magnus Backstedt added,

  "This will be a true test for me as well, as I will have to not only keep up the pace for 13 days for myself, but also monitor on my bike's onboard computer how well the others are doing, so I can maximise the best from them and ensure we make the whole 13 days in time"

Eaton Hall Garden Open Day

Visitors will get the chance to explore the gardens at Eaton Hall this month thanks to an extra open day during the school summer holidays.

The stunning Old English Rose garden is currently in full bloom at the family home of The Duke and Duchess of Westminster.  The 88-acre gardens in Eccleston will host visitors on Saturday, 24th July for an additional 2010 Garden Open Day.

The gardens are usually opened to the public only three times a year but the extra day has been organised to help raise funds for the Countess of Chester Hospital's Relative Comfort Appeal, Chester Youth Club, the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (Cheshire Branch) and the local villages project.

Visitors can enjoy lakeside walks, herbaceous borders full of summer flowers, the formal summer bedding display, organic kitchen garden full of produce and a sculpture trail.

Children can ride on Katie, the miniature steam engine, and there will be ice creams and other refreshments on sale.

The Little Big Band will be entertaining the crowds by the Parrot House during the day.

Eaton Chapel, the carriage museum, the former stables and the family history and exhibition rooms will also be open to visitors.

The Open Day runs from 1.30pm to 5.30 pm and entry costs £5 for adults and £1 for children.  Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead.

Entry to the Open Day is via the gates at Aldford (B5130) and Eccleston/Belgrave (B5445).  Entry for coaches is via the Belgrave Gate only.

For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Shisha, in partnership with Tatton Park Biennial, hosts Manasamitra’s extraordinary dance performance, A glimpse into the sleeping world, as part of Tatton Park Biennial 2010: Framing Identity.

The performance takes its audience on the fantastical journey of a young girl, Kalyani, who lives at the edge of a forest in India and is famed for her beauty and courage. The prince of the land seeks her hand in marriage, but Kalyani loves a musician and wants to spend her life in the idyllic surroundings of the forest immersed in the soulful music of her beloved. With the help of a wicked witch, the prince tricks Kalyani into wearing enchanted earrings that send her to sleep and take her into the land of dreams where she will remain for eternity unless she can be rescued.

A costume drama filled with music, poetry and dance, the work responds to the magnificent gardens at Tatton Park as well as specific pieces of commissioned art for the 2010 Biennial. Performers include Supriya Nagarajan, Indian classical vocalist  and dancers Srikanth Subramaniam and Laxminarayanan Ganesan. Vijay Venkat will play flute and violin and Venkateswaran Chandirasekharan will provide percussion.

Its 25 years since Dennis Taylor triumphed against Steve Davis at the World Championship, a match seen by over 18 million people. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him on the big stage, but now he’s back to entertain his fans one more chance.
Cliff Thorburn remains the only ever overseas winner of the World Championship, his victory in 1980 made him a national hero in Canada and endeared him to millions of fans in the UK. In 1983 he achieved the first ever 147 in the tournament. In 1983 Cliff was awarded the Order of Canada.
Darling of Snooker fans everywhere and jungle favourite, Jimmy White is still undoubtedly one of the most popular faces the game has ever had.  Still competing on the main tour, and now carving out a name for himself in the new 6 red format of the game, he still commands a full house wherever he plays.  Jimmy was awarded the MBE for services to snooker in 1999.
John Parrott is familiar to millions as a regular BBC Snooker commentator, horse racing pundit and as a former captain on ‘A Question of Sport’. However the 1991 World and UK Snooker Champion is also a 3 time European Open Champion and appeared in 20 consecutive championships at the crucible from 1984 – 2004. In 1996 John was awarded the MBE
John Virgo, ‘JV’ himself, will also be on hand as compere, host and will also entertain the crowds with some trick shots. John himself is a former UK Snooker Champion.

Chester Races - Best Dressed Couple Competition

BE THE BEST DRESSED AND BECOME THE GOLDEN COUPLE

On Friday 9th July, Chester Racecourse will once again be combining the thrill of racing with the glamour of race day fashions with the spectacular ‘Best Dressed’ competition, which this Friday evening sees both men and women being able to enter.

Chester Racecourse has teamed up with Golden Square Shopping Centre in Warrington to bring a fashion themed race meeting to the Roodee. Racegoers with a flair for fashion will be invited to see who will be crowned the Best Dressed to win £2,000 worth of fantastic prizes.

From the many hopefuls, four couple will be shorted listed and invited to the Paddock Rooms to celebrate with a glass of champagne before entering the Parade Ring for the final selection. First prize will be £1,000 of vouchers to spend at Golden Square plus a makeover by Debenhams as well as Regis Hair as well as a personal shopper experience to shop until they drop and get advice on all of the latest fashions.

Second prize is £500 to spend at Golden Square and a makeover from Debenhams plus personal shopper experience. Third prize is £250 plus Debenhams makeover and personal shopper experience and fourth prize is a delicious meal for two at Restaurant 1539, where the couple can enjoy wonderful views over the racecourse while sampling the delicious contemporary British at its best.

Director, Andy Reilly says, “Set in 1966, Wait Until Dark is the story of Susy, a newly blind woman, who lives in a basement flat in Notting Hill. All of her recently learned skills of coping in a dark world are brought to the fore when she is terrorised by three con men. As the three villains block her every means of escape, Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she levels the playing field by plunging her flat into total darkness, in a surprise ending that is truly breathtaking to watch.”

“This psychological thriller asks which frightens us more—the evil you can see coming, or the one you can’t? Although the tone of the play can be very dark at times, it is a story full of heroism that celebrates human dignity, courage, faith, and the best in all of us.”

 With the open auditions coming up soon, Andy is inviting new members to come along and audition for the fantastic parts on offer. There are roles for 4 men, including the cool-as-ice psychopath, Roat.  For women, the role of Susy is up for grabs.  This part was famously played by Lee Remick, Honor Blackman and for the movie version, Audrey Hepburn, earning Ms Hepburn nominations for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actress.  There is also the part of a teenage girl.

Chester Theatre Club will are holding auditions for their November play, Wait Until Dark by Frederick Knott.

Director, Andy Reilly says, “Set in 1966, Wait Until Dark is the story of Susy, a newly blind woman, who lives in a basement flat in Notting Hill. All of her recently learned skills of coping in a dark world are brought to the fore when she is terrorised by three con men. As the three villains block her every means of escape, Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she levels the playing field by plunging her flat into total darkness, in a surprise ending that is truly breathtaking to watch.”

“This psychological thriller asks which frightens us more—the evil you can see coming, or the one you can’t? Although the tone of the play can be very dark at times, it is a story full of heroism that celebrates human dignity, courage, faith, and the best in all of us.”

The 33rd annual Chester Summer Music Festival, once again, promises to be a great line up of established names and rising stars, set in the beautiful surroundings of Chester.

Artistic Director, Andrew Cornall, has once again put together a programme that showcases the finest in festival music - this year with a hint of France. At the heart of the festival remains the joy of choral music, whether it’s performed by international choirs – the Choir of King’s College Cambridge (with Faure’s Requiem) or the Tallis Scholars or performed by yourself in the BIG SING, the love of music for the voice will always be present throughout the two weeks culminating in a performance by our very own Chester Festival Chorus.

But that’s not all. For lovers of orchestral music, we have the European Union Chamber Orchestra with the stunning Nicola Benedetti as soloist in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Poet Andrew Motion will also be on hand to read new poems inspired by the pictorial music of Vivaldi’s great masterpiece, a must see concert. Also David Hill conducts the Opera North orchestra in Saint-Saen’s great Organ Symphony in the glorious ambience of Chester Cathedral.

There is a cabaret evening with Melanie Marshall, the re-formed Penguin Café bring their quirky and hugely entertaining music, Kathryn Tickell brings the beautiful sound of the Northumbrian pipes and an evening of the best folk music. We’ll hear chamber music concerts from the Heath Quartet, the guitar quartet Aquarelle and from Holland the wind ensemble Calefax. Our popular lunchtime concerts in St Mary’s Centre will run right through the festival showcasing some of the best young talent.

The Devil’s Disciple At Chester Little Theatre

Are you bored to tears of wall-to wall football?  Come and immerse yourself in an evening of culture at Chester Little Theatre.  They promise melodrama, tears, laughter, and George Bernard Shaw’s very own brand of gallows humour!

From 28th June til 3rd July, Chester Theatre Club present The Devil’s Disciple by George Bernard Shaw.

The play is a thrilling blend of comedy, melodrama and courtroom tension.  Set in a Puritan town during the American Revolutionary War, it begins “at the most wretched hour between a black night and a wintry morning in the year 1777”.  It is the story of rascally Dick Dudgeon, who has rejected Puritan morals for a life of debauchery, cards, wine and women, calling himself the Devil’s Disciple.  We follow his unexpected decision to save the life of a virtual stranger, and in doing so, to forfeit his own.

The Devil’s Disciple deals with philosophical and political questions which remain unanswered today.  Shaw said “[Theatre] should take itself seriously as a factory of thought, a prompter of conscience, an elucidator of social conduct, an armoury against despair and dullness, and a temple of the Ascent of Man”.  In contrast to this learned view, the play is a also rollicking good show; the New York Times called the play “a sometimes crude drama full of event: swashbuckling action, sexual tension and looming violence”, and the final act a “delightfully absurd farce”.

The much-missed Tony O’Byrne, much feted for his award-winning performance as Jeffrey Barnard in Jeffrey Barnard Is Unwell, plays the eponymous Devil’s Disciple, and is very pleased to be acting opposite another award-winner, Barbara Jemmett, who won best actress as Katherine in The Taming Of The Shrew.

The rest of the cast is made up of a mixture of experienced and well-loved Theatre Club veterans, and some new actors who haven’t trod the boards since their schooldays.  It is directed by Alison Knott, and is her second production for the club.  They are all very much looking forward to the challenge of this exhilarating play, and hope you will join them at 7.30pm from 28th June to 3rd July.

Come and find out why has Dick decided to martyr himself.  Could it be that he has finally fallen in love?  Is he willing to die for a pretty face, or is it for the rebel principles that he is making a stand? And will he manage to escape the gallows?

Tom Rolt Centenary Rally

CENTENARY RALLY CELEBRATES CHESTER BORN AUTHOR

August 1939 saw a young, newly married couple, Tom & Angela Rolt, leave Banbury to cruise the inland waterways with their narrow boat “Cressy”.  Tom’s book “Narrow Boat”, chronicles their experiences and its publication in 1945 received so much popular acclaim that it led to the formation of The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) in 1946.  The aims were to campaign for proper management, conservation, funding and restoration of the inland waterways – aims which are just as vital today as they were in 1946.

2010 will be the Centenary of the birth of Tom Rolt.  He was born in Chester and as part of the national celebrations, IWA Chester Branch will be holding a Celebration Rally of boats at Tower Wharf over the weekend of the 26 & 27 June 2010.  The Civic Trust also hope to erect a blue plaque on his birthplace during the weekend.

Tom Rolt was also a founder member of the Vintage Sports Car Club and the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society.  Rally organisers are therefore delighted that the “Tom Rolt” steam train will be joining us for the weekend (on a trailer) from Talyllyn whilst members of the Vintage Sports Car Club will be bringing their beautiful vehicles along too.

Two IWA Oxfordshire Branch members will be re-creating Tom & Angela’s 1939 cruise on their narrowboat “Heron” – and hope to arrive in Chester, to join the vast numbers of visiting boats – both modern and historic – who have booked in for the weekend.

To illustrate our theme of Past, Present and Future – we hope to have a hydrogen powered concept narrow boat joining us for the weekend from Birmingham University.

Other attractions during the weekend include live music, courtesy of the popular country band “Hartford West” and the Waterways Action Team volunteers who will be putting on musical workshops and performances.  Members of the Craft Guild from the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum will also be demonstrating their skills on Sunday.

For young people – there will be the opportunity to join in the music workshops or to try some angling, with a team from “Get Hooked on Fishing”.  There will also be IWA’s own WOW (Wild over Waterways) activities so that children can try brass rubbing, lace plate making, knot tying and others.

With traders and refreshments on site there is something of interest for all the family.

For a healthy, enjoyable way to try something different this New Year without breaking the bank, Chester music and dance venue D’ Meltin’ Pot on Watergate Row is running free beginners’ salsa taster sessions on both Sundays (7pm) and Tuesdays (8pm) throughout January. Said D’ Meltin’ Pot’s owner, Mike Mitchell: ““If you can’t face the thought of sweating away in the gym or jogging in the winter weather, dance is a pain-free option which is now widely promoted above more traditional fitness regimes. In fact, in some areas, The National Health Service even provides dance classes to help reduce obesity and improve well-being. It’s a proven way to build fitness and develop flexibility and balance. Like any form of exercise, it kickstarts your endorphins and, combined with the social aspect, it has a real ‘feel good’ factor for overall well-being and improved mental health. “This is just the time of year when people are thinking about trying something new to get in shape and branch out and either meet new people or enjoy a new activity with their partner or friends. We thought we’d make it even easier for everyone with our free salsa taster offer for January. If you’ve fancied trying a class but have never got round to it, there is now officially no excuse!” Concluded Mike: “Salsa is a great way to get out, get fit and have fun. You don’t need to bring a partner, just come along ready to enjoy yourself! As well as salsa and bachata classes and parties, D’ Meltin’ Pot runs affordable dance classes in other styles including street dance and even pole dancing, and has a busy weekly programme of music and dance events including live bands, top DJs and a regular Wednesday jam session for budding musicians.
